Gender Issues In Sport!

Gender issues have been a hot topic in golf circles over the past two years, but there is a new twist as Mianne Bagger prepares to tee off today in the AAMI Women's Australian Open.

Bagger, 37, underwent sex-reassignment surgery in 1995 and will become the first transsexual to play in a women's pro tournament.

Can you even begin to imagine what kind of scrutiny Bagger is facing.

"My sexuality is just one of the obstacles I am going to have to face," Bagger told Australia's Sunday Mail . "This is my first professional golf tournament, with extra focus on me as well because of my circumstances, so I really don't know how I'm going to handle it."

Bagger, who was born in Denmark, is 5 foot 10, 150 pounds and drives the ball about 240 yards. She had a 4-handicap as a male in her early 20s and stopped playing for three years after her surgery. She turned pro in August.

Unlike the U.S. Golf Association and LPGA Tour, Women's Golf Australia, which runs the event, doesn't have a stipulation that players must be born female.

Bagger won the South Australian State Championship in 1999, 2001 and 2002 and will be playing this week on an exemption.

"I would like people to see my game, meet me, have a chat and form some opinions after that rather than judge me on some preconceived ideas or what they think they know," Bagger told the Herald Sun of Australia.

As far as I can see Transsexuals are as soft and as beautiful as any female and I think their right to compete as a female should be upheld :)
